"Charity is commendable, everyone should be charitable. But Justice aims to create a social order in which, if individuals choose not to be charitable, people still don't go hungry, unschooled or sick without care. June 20, 2009 in World Refugee Day Would you personally be willing to participate with us again in a planned vigil @ the T. Don Hutto detention Ctr.?
Good afternoon friends...
Here's a call for solidarity...
June 20, 2009 is the World Refugee Day...also known as the International Refugee Day. It falls on a Saturday.
Two years ago we collaborated with Amnesty International and dozens of other organizations held the largest protest against the imprisonment of children at the T. Don Hutto detention facility.
Children are still imprisoned there. Other such "family" prisons are in the planning stages by the Department of Homeland Security. This immoral and un-American practice must stop.
Would you personally be willing to participate with us again in a planned vigil, on June 20th, the World Refugee Day, in solidarity with the innocent children and their mothers who are imprisoned in Hutto...to encourage the new President and new Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security to put an end to the Bush-Cheney-Chertoff practices?
President Obama has called for an end to tyranny of Guantanamo and torture. How about if we encourage him to bring an end to the immoral incarceration of children, asylum seekers and desperate refugees...which is being done, not for national security but "for profit"?
If you and are willing to join us or simply endorse this event from wherever you are, please e-mail Sarah Boone at sboone@stx.rr.com or call (830)768-1100.
Calling for solidarity...to free innocent children...

Sheriff Joe Arpaio's Own Records Raise Serious Questions About Inmate Juan Mendoza Farias' Violent Death

Juan Mendoza Farias,
Lower Buckeye Jail,
jail deaths under Sheriff Joe Arpaio
Two hours later, during a separate altercation with 11 other guards, Farias stopped breathing and then died.
Those details come from Maricopa County Sheriff's detectives' investigation of the incident. On November 14, the Sheriff's Office released nearly 5,000 pages of jail records — four months after New Times requested them, wrote a story about the sheriff's stonewalling, and filed a lawsuit to secure them.
The lawsuit was filed in October. Without a court order or ruling, sheriff's attorney Michelle Iafrate volunteered to release most of the records — about one week after Arpaio won re-election.
New Times first reported on Farias' death in September ("Dead Again," September 11). At that time, the sheriff refused to hand over a single public record regarding Farias. New Times based its story on photos of Farias' beaten body, as well as an autopsy and jail guard reports, secured through a public-records request made to the Maricopa County Office of the Medical Examiner.
The limited records secured in September revealed that Farias stopped breathing on December 5, 2007, when 11 guards pinned him face-down on a concrete "bed" in the Lower Buckeye Jail. When the guards pulled a "spit mask" off Farias' face, they noticed blood coming from his mouth.
The release of additional records reveals a fuller and even more disturbing scene. According to eyewitness reports from guards and inmates inside the jail, guards violently subdued Farias three different times. Jail guards say that Farias was violent, but testimony from inmates contradicts that. It's difficult to even see what Farias is doing in video footage because so many guards piled on him and the video has no sound. The altercations included two different groups of guards on different shifts.
The altercations lasted from approximately 8:30 p.m. to 11:10 p.m., when Farias urinated, stopped breathing, and began bleeding from his mouth and nose. By that time, Farias — naked, with his legs shackled — had been moved through three different isolation cells. Doctors at St. Joseph's Hospital pronounced him dead early the next morning.
The new records contain a sheriff's "criminal investigation" into Farias' death, including detective interviews of more than 50 jail guards and inmates. The detectives produced an investigation summary for the county attorney. The records stop short of naming which guards the investigators thought played a role in Farias' death. The county attorney also issued a grand jury subpoena, the records indicate.
The records do not reveal the ultimate outcome of the criminal investigation or the grand jury proceedings.
In the sheriff's interviews, inmates say that guards "high-fived" and congratulated each other after the first of three brawls with Farias.
The guards repeatedly told detectives that they didn't use excessive force, nor did they see other guards doing so. The second-shift guards also say that they weren't aware how harshly Farias had been handled when they came on shift.
The records also include video, which offers 29 different camera angles of Farias in the jail. The videos are in color and show Farias in focus. That is, until the time when guard reports say that Farias stopped breathing under their weight. At that time — and for the next 40 minutes of CPR — the sheriff's attorney claims no camera angle captured what happened.
The biggest holes in the records are the missing camera footage — of the first Taser and pepper-ball attack and the final dog pile, when Farias stopped breathing. The reports also fail to give a clear conclusion of the detectives' findings.
What follows here is an overview of new information about Farias and the guards who handled him, revealed in the 4,978 pages of documentation compiled by the sheriff's homicide detectives.
Farias, 40, was a legal U.S. resident with a legitimate Social Security number. He spoke Spanish only and was a self-professed alcoholic. Glendale Police arrested him on December 2, 2007 — on an outstanding warrant for violating probation from a DUI.
About 15 minutes before doctors declared Farias dead, the MCSO ordered an immigration specialist to triple-check his immigration status, the records show.
"On 12/06/07 . . . at 7 a.m. I was assigned the task of verifying the immigration status of Juan Mendoza. Even though Mendoza's booking record for this incident states he had been interviewed and no ICE holds were required . . . I was told that Mendoza was legally in the United States, with Legal Permanent Resident status," investigator T. Sullivan wrote.
Farias had been in Arpaio's jail for only two days when he died. But it was evident that Farias needed medical attention from the time he was booked. According to the sheriff's reports, Farias experienced a number of seizures when he first entered the jail and was taken to the jail infirmary.
At least two of the guards told detectives that Farias should not have been released back into the general population.

Tucson radio wing nut "Jon Justice" gets panties in twist over Joe Arpaio pinata.
Wed Jul 16, 2008 at 05:24:50 PM
Video of the Tucson protest of Arpaio, from Jon Justice's 1041TheTruth, showing a Sheriff Joe piñata being beaten and Isabel Garcia scooping up its head.
Like you need more proof that times are way-way-slow down in the "Old Pueblo," Tucson radio wing nut "Jon Justice" is hunting the head of local pro-immigrant firebrand Isabel Garcia after Garcia toted the decapitated noggin of a Sheriff Joe Arpaio piñata at an anti-Joe protest.
Seems Nickel Bag Joe was down in Tucson recently for yet another book signing for his prevarication-friendly work of fiction Joe's Law. You know, the one where he claims to have been behind the crippling of the French Connection drug ring, and where he maintains that the Mexican mafia, the Minutemen and immigrant rights activist Elias Bermudez are conspiring against his life. Anyway, Joe was at a Tucson Barnes and Noble to pimp the tome, and there was a lawful protest at the B&N that included scores of demonstrators, and featured, at one point, a Sheriff Joe piñata that two teens beat to a pulp.
Um, like, so what? After all, Phoenicians may recall, if they strain really hard, that the local activist group PUEBLO caught a little heck from the media on Cinco de Mayo, when their inaugural shindig included several Sheriff Joe piñatas that were creamed by party-goers until Joe's candied innards rained from the sky like stripper dollars. PUEBLO was pilloried for the day, unfairly from my point of view, but even Joe didn't make that big of a stink over the matter. He got his mug on the telly that eve, and it wasn't even a media event his highly-paid army of PR flacks had orchestrated. Christ, the old fart was practically giddy
Less than 48 hours later, the PUEBLO piñatas were forgotten, like last month's celebrity meltdown. And why shouldn't they be? We're just talking about some papier-mâché dolls stuffed with Tootsie Rolls and affixed with Joe's dyspeptic mug. Plus, whacking political piñatas ain't nothing new, much less eyebrow-raising, unless you're a complete ass-backwards moron with the cultural I.Q. of a Lincoln Log. Down in Latin America, it’s practically de rigueur for a pol to get bopped in this fashion, but you don’t have to go so far afield. Just check out piñatas.com, where you can find piñatas to abuse of all political stripes – whether it’s Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, Dick Cheney or Fidel Castro.
But it seems some rubes in Arizona's Second City think Joe Arpaio should belong to a protected class. Meat-headed lip-flapper Jon Justice, who spews loony venom for Tucson news talk station 104.1 FM "The Truth" (yeah, right), has organized a campaign to get Isabel Garcia fired from her post as the Pima County Legal Defender, because she was present when the piñata-smacking went down, and afterward lifted up the severed toy head and carried it forth through the crowd of protesters. He also wants her disbarred, and because Garcia has long been a lightning rod for nativist hate groups, he’s motivated other drooling imbeciles to call Garcia’s boss at the county and complain.
Interestingly, Jon Just-An-Ass recently added a full-size Garcia piñata to his shtick, and fondled it for a YouTube video, thereby removing all doubt as to his status as a blithering idiot. I guess if we were to take seriously his claim that Garcia threatened Joe with violence by picking up the piñata head, we'd have to assume, by the same wack logic, that he was threatening Garcia with sexual assault by molesting her effigy?
Considering the political slant of this Jon Justice clown, his anti-Garcia campaign would pretty much be par for the reactionary course were it not for a Tucson Citizen opinion piece published yesterday, penned by Anne Denogean, titled "Protesters as offensive as Sheriff Joe,” wherein she took Garcia to task for her actions.
“While the beating of Arpaio in effigy proceeded, Isabel Garcia, head of Humanos Derechos, a group that purports to stand for the dignity of all human beings, stood by and laughed.
“The spectacle reminded me of the antics of an extremist on the other side of the issue, a Tucson man who does his best to incite riots by burning Mexican flags in public places. I wondered how Garcia would react if the virulent anti-illegal immigrant hard-liners were to burn her in effigy or hang a papier-mâché figure meant to represent an Mexican illegal immigrant."
Remember, Arpaio is the Sheriff of Maricopa County, not Pima County. And our corrupt top constable has recently made it the priority of his office to racially profile and arrest undocumented residents on the flimsiest of pretexts, his deputies holding them in custody and leaning on them to sign voluntary removals back to their countries of origin, usually Mexico. In doing so, he tears mothers and fathers from their children and sometimes vice versa, all for minor offenses like a cracked windshield or a non-working tail light.
Of course, there are more reasons to loathe Nickel Bag Joe than just his sweeps of immigrant communities and the intimidation and fear-mongering that comes with them. There are the wrongful deaths in his jails and the horrendous conditions therein, which have cost Maricopa County taxpayers over $43 million in lawsuit payouts to date. There’s also Joe’s political corruption, his retaliation against critics and opponents, and his endless show-boating for the cameras.
All reasons enough to thump a piñata to me, and for Tucson’s residents to tell Arpaio to get lost. But Denogean takes offense.
“The protesters did their best to run Arpaio out of town, with signs urging him to go home.Frankly, as an American, Arpaio has the right to go wherever he pleases.
“But more important, the demand that Arpaio get out of our town is as bad as the suggestion by those on the other side of the immigration debate that anyone who dares utter the words "comprehensive immigration reform" should hitch a ride on the next donkey to Mexico.”
Uh, no. It’s not as bad, Anne. When a tyrant sashays into town, people have every right, and dare I say, moral obligation to tell that tyrant where to go in no uncertain terms. If Robert Mugabe, Fidel Castro or the late Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet were doing a book signing in your burg, wouldn’t you expect folks to vociferously protest such human rights abusers? Perhaps even by bashing a piñata, burning an effigy or telling these authoritarian a-holes to head home?
Arpaio’s jails have been condemned by Amnesty International, and his anti-Hispanic dragnets are being investigated by the Feds. He deserves every symbolic lick he gets. Plus, I’ll let you in on a little secret Denogean, Joe feeds off the hate. He loves this sort of stuff, and it allows him to play to his base. A Joe-critic like you coming to his defense would only seem comical to him.
As for this radio chucklehead’s suggestion that Garcia should be fired, censured or disbarred, Justice is basically filling his own smelly little news hole and garnering attention for himself. It would be a real mistake for anyone in a position of responsibility either at the Arizona State Bar or Pima County government to take this goofball Sean Hannity wannabe (and never-gonnabe) seriously. For her part, Garcia is unapologetic, writing in a statement on the Web site of the advocacy group she co-chairs, Derechos Humanos, that,
“I am proud to have been part of the community's response to [Arpaio’s] arrival in Tucson…As an attorney I find it is not only my right, but my responsibility to stand up when the power of the state is used to crush people. I will continue to do so.”
Now, that’s a lady with stones. If Pima County doesn’t want her, she should head north. We could use a ballsy babe like her here in the PHX.
Note to Roy Wackjob below: Go ahead, take your best shot, Oswald.

Desecrating a Sacred Shrine: McCain, J. Bush & Lieberman at the Tepeyac.
This man has no shame whatsoever, is there any doubt that he wants to ingratiate himself to Mexicans in particular and Latinamericans in general? He is desperate and is willing to do anything, even use the belief of millions for political points, without even the slightest understanding of, or total disregard for, whichever is the case, what she has historically represented and what she represents today to so many of us?
McCain, Jebb Bush and Joe Lieberman represent and stand against what our symbol represents and what it means to millions, which is totally contrary to what these......... people support and advocate for; to continue the 'Manifest Destiny' agenda, McCain was and is totally in favor of the Iraq invasion (More people of color slaughtered) and wants to continue the US War Policies, preferably against people of color, mainly Brown, for a 100 years more, maybe a thousand.
For, how can anybody believe that McCain did honor Tonantzin when he dishonors, allows vicious attacks to, and persecution of the people who believe in her and have her color? Yeah, I'm talking about Immigrant workers whom he is willing to harm even more by destroying the economies and industries of their country by advocating and working in earnest to implement more 'free trade agreements' and thus force more of them into the 21st century's version of slave labor?
After all, I have not heard him advocating to stop the raids and the separation of families until Immigration Reform is enacted, have you? At best he has paid lip service to this issue, in his theatrical ways, he introduced legislation for immigration reform to then flip-flop again, all for political points, from where I stand, in a true and tried Republican tradition, he lights up both sides of the candle, or as the Native Americans say: "He speaks with forked tongue".
He is the Senator from Arizona, isn't he? I have not heard a blip from him about how Arizona treats the immigrant and Latino communities, hasn't he heard of the abuses of Law Enforcement Officials, namely Sheriff Joe Arpaio? He, who proclaimed not only to be proud, but that it is an honor that his name is associated with the Ku Klux Klan and also proud to collaborate with vigilantes who have stated their desire to start shooting Mexicans (Illegals? Is John McCain's racism so deep that he is willing to let this brutally abusive sheriff waste taxpayers funds in pursuing undocumented immigrants while at the same time neglects his duty of going after real criminals? Has anybody heard McCain say anything against what this sheriff has been doing?
How can one believe that he is sincere in his 'honoring' Tonantzin when, as the Senator from Arizona, doesn't even acknowledge the abuses being committed against the Mexican/Latino community in his home state? Hasn't he heard about the racial profiling going on there? And what about the super oppressive legislation being enacted there as well? Hasn't he heard the words that the Media Hatemongers, whom he calls 'my friends', spew daily against people of color? What the hell! Let's call it for what it is, Racism, Xenophobia and Nativism.
I'm so upset at this ignominy and that not many more are clamoring in protest of this slap in the face by this man, his entourage and the greedy Prostitute that is the Catholic Church Hierarchy, what? Prostitute it is too strong a word for the Catholic Church? Well, my fear is that I'll be offending sex workers with the use of it, after all, they work and risk life and limb (The Sex Workers) for the money they receive, as far as I'm concerned, the members of the Catholic Church Supreme Hierarchy are not worthy to even kiss the ground the sex workers thread.
For the ones who are offended by my calling the Catholic Church Hierarchy, a prostitute, allow me to remind you that for more than 200 years after the claim of her apparition to Juan Diego (Nahuatl name Cuauhtlatoatzin ("La venerable águila que habla" ("The Venerable Eagle that talks/speaks"))), their predecessors attacked the belief for Tonantzin and her believers, it was not until they saw the profits that embracing her followers would bring that they jumped into the pile of gold that the Cult of Tonantzing was and is today, and that is only one instance, the Catholic Church Hierarchy is and has been so corrupt, in so many areas, and at so many levels, that entire volumes have been written which validate my claims, for space's sake, I'll not go into the many crimes committed by them throughout history and I also must leave out for the same reason, the ones committed by omission.
As for my credentials for speaking as I have, I only need one but I'll give you three, I'm a Catholic, a Danzante Mexica and Gudalupana and I consider it my sacred duty, in the most forgotten, but that should be the most revered, Catholic tradition and by also emulating Jesus of Nazareth of denouncing what the hypocrites have been doing, how they have sold the poor and most oppressed to Mammon, is there anybody who would like to argue with me against what I'm saying? That their demigod, which is not my concept of God, eats at the rich man's table and does his bidding?
And they have the gall to take McCain, J. Bush and Lieberman to El Tepeyac, to allegedly honor Tonantzin, WHAT A PILE OF BS.
And just to finish and not let it be unsaid, a few words about the RATzinger at the Vatican, who has for years dismantling any and all tenets of Jesus' Liberation Theology, they have been pushing aside bit by bit what the Second Vatican Council, which opened on October 11th 1962, was trying to accomplish, he (RATzinger) is stepping all over the Populorum Progressio by supporting regressive politicians such as joined-at-the-hip G.W. Bush and McCain, the representative of Jesus on Earth? Ha! He denigrates the Man.
Do I have a reason to be upset and to believe that McCain's visit to Tonatzing desecrated a shrine and was a slap on the face? I think I do.
With all due respect to your also valid opinion, this is mine.
