The clang and ring of the trolley in this video informs you that you're not in Sand Land any more. Indeed, the setting for this demonstration documented by videographer, photographer and activist Bill Carpenter is enlightened and tres lefty San Francisco, specifically, the steps of Wells Fargo's national headquarters in the city. On September 18, protesters rallied there in support of the effort to oust Sheriff Joe Arpaio from the Wells Fargo bank building in downtown Phoenix, where protests have been happening every weekday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. since the beginning of the month.

This San Francisco demo was organized in sympathy with Arizona activist Sal Reza of PUENTE and members of the National Day Labor Organizing Network, who are carrying out the Phoenix action. It is the second protest in solidarity with PUENTE's protest. The first took place on September 10 at a Wells Fargo in Chicago.
More are coming. Last week, forty young organizers joined Reza at the Wells Fargo bank building at 100 W. Washington Street, the site of Sheriff Joe's "Pentagon," where the sheriff's office keeps two floors of executive offices at a price tag of well over $600K per annum, paid for by county taxpayers. Those 40 organizers were from 40 different cities. This week, they fan out across the country to their hometowns to organize similar actions.
The first to speak at the San Francisco demo was lawyer/organizer Renee Saucedo of La Raza Centro Legal, which provides legal and other services to over 12,000 citizens of the greater Bay Area.
"What is our demand?" asked Saucedo. "It's very simple: We want Wells Fargo to stop leasing space to this racist Sheriff Arpaio and stop benefiting and profiting from his racist law enforcement tactics."
Gerald Lenoir of the Black Alliance for Just Immigration also took to the bullhorn with some tough words for Maricopa County's corrupt top constable, whom Lenoir called "the Bull Connor of our age," referring to the infamous, racist head of the police in Birmingham, Alabama during the '60s.
"Sheriff Arpaio has the nerve to call immigrants who come here undocumented illegal," said Lenoir. "We say his tactics of racial profiling...[are] illegal. And he is the one that is breaking the law."
As these new protests blossom in cities and towns across America, it's certain to bring more unwelcome press for Wells Fargo. Bankers don't like losing one red cent in deposits, and Sal Reza has threatened that the next step will be divestment. That is, asking people to stop banking with Wells Fargo altogether. If Reza can get this thing to go national, it raises the stakes and the pressure for the bank, which undoubtedly does not want to lose any business in these harsh economic times.

"Michael Savage is not the sickness, he is a God-Awful symptom"
Of Media Ownership's Rules and Regulations.
There's a claim that Michael Savage is not racist, xenophobic, homophobic, transphobic, misogynist, etc. and that the language and the characterizations he uses daily in his show "The Savage Nation" Are merely the words of a Patriot who is defending his country, as the mantle he put on implies by the creation of his "Paul Revere Society" with him riding his horse yelling: "The Latino immigrants are coming to invade us!", "The Latino immigrants are coming to invade us!"
Now, there's a debate that needs to take place but, alas!, the so called "Mainstream Media", in general, does not allow for opposing views to be heard, as to why this is so would take at least a full volume to do justice to the issue, but in short, these media people on the fringes of the political dialog such as: Neal Boortz, Bill O'Reilly, Glen Beck, , Ann Coulter and many others, have nationally syndicated shows and/or are invited to Network Channels and allowed to make outrageous and regularly baseless comments without challenge from the hosts and with the exception of a few guests with mildly opposing views, there's practically no guests with real opposing views or opinions, or these shock-jock hosts are just simply dismissed or ignored thus keeping the stream of hateful words to continue unabated.
Whether or not people like Michael Savage are prejudiced or hold phobias against segments of the population who are attacked as groups, it is not the main issue, at stake is the poisoning of the minds of millions of people who then make decisions based on what they hear on such shock-jock shows to support exclusionary or punitive legislation in accordance with the message received, it also creates and sustains a social atmosphere that adversely hurts the targeted groups without the benefit of hearing the other side of the narrative.
Case in point: On August 14 2007 there was a press conference to announce a demonstration on August 15 2007 in front of M. Savage's broadcasting booth to protest his statements RE immigrant students fasting to raise awareness and support for the passage of the DREAM ACT.
Is it Hate Speech what Savage and people also holding his positions do?, or is it Free Speech as his supporters claim?
We, the protesters feel that what Michael Savage does, creates an atmosphere of warrantless intolerance that incites hate and violence and needs to be publicized/debated/discussed in public forums, but with the exception of Spanish speaking Media's limited coverage of the action, the Mainstream Media silence on it, was deafening, besides a C.W. Nevius balanced article in the San Francisco Chronicle: Despite Latino protest, silencing Savage seems unlikely" Wednesday, August 15, 2007, and some bloggers reporting on Michael Savage's words and what people are saying, as you can find on the Huffington Post Bloggers:, you have to go to Spanish speaking reporters such as Erika Cebreros', writing for El Mensajero and La Opinion Digital - Discriminación ‘salvaje’ - Rechazan ‘palabras de odio’ - Protesta comunidad latina contra el locutor Michael Savage, arrollado por el ‘Tren de la dignidad humana’ Lunes, 20 de agosto de 2007 , the few seconds on the 6 and 11 pm news shows on Univision, Telemundo, local English TV outlets in SF on that day, progressive websites and 'leftist' local publications, what you normally find on the Mainstream National Media and on the internet, are misleading articles, the rest for the most part, is intolerance and hate coverage.
Thanks to some local Spanish AM radio stations in San Francisco, San Jose, Sacramento, Seattle and Phoenix, that I know of, who gave us air time to carry our message locality to locality, we will get there if we keep the eyes on the prize.

Since last year, new developments have taken place, more organizations are getting more involved and have joined in the struggle to stop the verbal, legal and physical attacks against the Hispanic / Latino community in general and against immigrants in particular, such as NHMC's Campaign "Latinos Against Hate Speech", and NCLR's "WAVE OF HOPE" With their "We Can Stop The Hate" Campaign.

Born Michael Weiner in the Bronx in 1942, the future Savage graduated from Queens College with a degree in biology, after which he attended the University of Hawaii for master’s degrees in anthropology and botany. He spent the rest of the late 1960s and early 1970s traveling the South Seas. Weiner received his doctorate from the University of California in epidemiology and nutrition science. He became an expert on herbal remedies, penning more than 15 books while still known as Michael Weiner, including such classics as Earth Medicine, Earth Food, Getting off Cocaine: 30 Days to Freedom, and The Complete Book of Homeopathy. While his knowledge base in herbal medicine was vast, he was more of a snake oil salesman than anything else. In Getting off Cocaine, he gave addicts “an alternative plan for getting ‘high’” that consisted of a daily dose of Sudafed, vitamins C and E, amino acids, and the occasional coffee enema. No word on the effectiveness of this treatment. His turn to the far right coincided with the rise of gay activism, as he linked homosexuality to the spread of not only AIDS, but the general spread of disease.
Savage is a prime purveyor of the slanderous liberal-bashing that passes for “humor” on talk radio. He describes his style as a mix of “Plato, Henry Miller, Jack Kerouac, Moses, Jesus, and Frankenstein,” although a comparison to Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde would also be appropriate, given his frequent mood swings. Savage is juvenile and defensive in his insults, resorting to lazy and trite grasps at “humor” as well as frequent comparisons of prominent progressives to Nazi leaders. In reference to Jimmy Carter’s criticism of Israel’s West Bank policy, Savage called him an “anti-Semitic bastard,” “Jew-hater,” and “war criminal” who is “like Hitler.” Yes, Michael Savage compares a celebrated humanitarian and Nobel Peace Prize winner to the man responsible for one of the worst genocides in history. He has referred to Brokeback Mountain as Bareback Mounting, making him as original as the guy who comes up with puns for pornographic movie titles.
Savage is also convinced that affirmative action is a conspiracy to hold back all white males.

How a Jewish kid from the Bronx went from swimming naked with Allen Ginsberg to spewing the ugliest bile on talk radio.
Everyone who has ever known Michael Weiner seems to agree that he has always been a big talker. One of his classmates from Jamaica High School in Queens, which Weiner graduated from in 1959, recalls him as a garrulous character: "He was on the short side, and he was intense -- a fast talker, and always hatching some scheme or other." "The fellow I knew was a natural comic and as reliable as a clock," remembers another classmate, who says the teenage Weiner was "non-political." His yearbook page notes his participation in the Chemistry Lab Squad, school government, and the Rifle Squad, presaging his interest in science, politics and firearms.

In "The Way of the Skeptical Nutritionist," he ventured that a person's ideal diet should be determined by his or her ethnicity. Broadcasting three hours a day, five afternoons a week, from a rented studio in downtown San Francisco, he gives voice to the right wing's darkest fantasies. He muses about launching preemptive nuclear strikes on the Middle East ("I wish to God the hatches were open and the missiles were flying!"), suggests gunning down illegal immigrants ("If we had a government, we'd blow them out of the desert with airplanes!"), dreams of dispatching with "commies, pinkos and perverts" and other undesirables ("I say round them up and hang 'em high!") and even paraphrases a remark attributed to Nazi leader Hermann Goering ("When I hear someone's in the civil rights business, I oil up my AR-15!")

El pasado 17 de mayo dio inicio un nuevo programa radial llamado "Unidad Hispana", con el fin de examinar el débil nivel de unidad en nuestra comunidad, las instituciones y especialmente, en el movimiento por los derechos de los migrantes.

El pasado 17 de mayo dio inicio un nuevo programa radial llamado "Unidad Hispana", con el fin de examinar el débil nivel de unidad en nuestra comunidad, las instituciones y especialmente, en el movimiento por los derechos de los migrantes.
El objetivo primordial es motivar a la acción a los individuos y a las fuerzas progresistas y humanitarias comprometidas con esta causa y movimiento para crear los mecanismos de unidad y alianzas que fortalecerían la estrategia y plan de acción regional y así, también incidir en el movimiento a nivel nacional.
Esta necesidad es imperante dado que en el 2009 se presentará nuevamente la oportunidad legislativa de una reforma inmigratoria integral en el Congreso de los Estados Unidos, con una mayor unidad, podemos dar una lucha con mas fuerza para que tal reforma sea lo más beneficiosa posible.
El programa "Unidad Hispana" necesita de su colaboración para sostenerse en el aire como programa no-comercial. Por hoy pagamos $300 por 25 minutos y nuestro objetivo es aumentarlo a una hora para lo cual necesitaremos $550.
Como organización le solicitamos una colaboración de $100 mensuales. Su organización será mencionada en el programa como patrocinadora y se dará el nombre, su misión y número telefónico. Y a los individuos que apoyan este llamado les solicitamos una colaboración de $25. Los negocios pueden patrocinarse colaborando con $50 para una mención de hasta 30 segundos.
El programa es dinámico, educativo e interactivo. En su formato incluirá temas candentes y provocadores como: ¿Qué es la unidad? y qué significa la afirmación: "¡la unión hace la fuerza!"; lo último en el tema de inmigración; noticias de América Latina; entrevistas con los representantes comunitarios; línea abierta a la audiencia; y reporte de las actividades del movimiento y las acciones y reuniones planeadas en el área de la Bahía.

IS IT HATE SPEECH? or is it FREE SPEECH?
And what's race has to do with it?
Besides being a good question, it is one that needs to be answered pronto, isn't?
While it is true that most of us have an answer, or at least we think we do, the fact of the matter is that whatever our position on the question is, it directly conflicts at a visceral level with camps holding different opinions and positions on the matter, so the solution clearly lays in agreeing to a compromise on where Free Speech ends and Hate Speech begins, or if there is a start and an end for that matter.
The answer is so obvious that it appears simple, or so we think... or may be lead to believe, whichever the case may be.
In my opinion, it is the wrong question, as a matter of fact, it is not ven a question, it should be a conclusion; some of the real questions to be answered and agreed upon are, what is free speech? are there or should there be any limits to free speech? what is hate speech? what are the qualifiers for either term?
A quick overview of the dialog on the issue, clearly shows that there are two basic points of view, a) there should not be any limitations to voicing your opinion in words and, b) when opinions in words incite violence, discrimination, aggravate phobias which harm human beings and/or curtail Constitutional Guarantees, it ceases to be free speech and turns into "Hate Speech" - Or puting it in another way, the freedom of one ends where the freedom of others begin.
Again, even so, the task of carrying a civil debate seems overwhelming due to the antagonistic tone of the discussion because it is always the other side the one engaging in Hate Speech, the solution appears simple; let's talk, let's have a dialog for the good of society, for the well-being of this country and it's relations with others.
Not so fast! We still have to address and deal with the racism that colors the opinions of some and drives the actions of others, in addition, let's include in the dialog the interests of those who benefit from the division of races and classes... do I need to continue?
And now I come full circle, the answer to thebasic question is simple,

BROOMFIELD – It started with a simple question and ended with at least one student chanting "white power" in a classroom.
It happened Tuesday in a classroom at Holy Family High School, the Catholic school that sits at the corner of 144th Avenue and Sheridan Boulevard in Broomfield.
The classroom discussion started with the question: Why do students need to learn Spanish?
According to the Archdiocese of Denver, the conversation soon became about immigration and it turned ugly.
"It became a heated discussion and some rhetoric was used that was inappropriate for the classroom," said Jeanette DeMelo, spokesperson for the Archdiocese of Denver.

It's been four months since a chorus of San Diego Minutemen shouted at Olga Diaz to "go back to Mexico" at an Escondido City Council meeting, yet Diaz still hears their jeers as clearly as if they were shouted at her last night. It would have been bad enough if Diaz actually was from Mexico, but she was born and raised in the United States and is therefore as American as President Bush himself. I was at City Hall that night and I remember literally feeling my skin crawl when Diaz had those words flung at her, followed by a rowdy burst of applause that echoed through the chambers.
It crawled in much the same way when I read about the family of legal immigrants from El Salvador who moved into a house in Kentucky and received, instead of a welcome basket, a burning cross on their lawn and a note that read:
"My country, maybe. My neighborhood ---- no way."

What was once considered shocking and degrading is now not only acceptable but considered worthy of emulation. One of the most extreme examples of hate disguised as entertainment was seen on a recent YouTube video posted by "The Cockroach Hunter," better known as Robert Crooks, founder of the Mountain Minutemen. The video, shot through a night scope and accompanied by a running commentary of ethnic slurs and profanity, shows the tracking and
apparent shooting of an undocumented immigrant on the border. It was removed from YouTube a few days ago, but not before it was viewed by thousands of people, giving rise to a free-for-all of hate in the ensuing comments and blog

According to the Archdiocese of Denver, the conversation soon became about immigration and it turned ugly.
"It became a heated discussion and some rhetoric was used that was inappropriate for the classroom," said Jeanette DeMelo, spokesperson for the Archdiocese of Denver.

It's been four months since a chorus of San Diego Minutemen shouted at Olga Diaz to "go back to Mexico" at an Escondido City Council meeting, yet Diaz still hears their jeers as clearly as if they were shouted at her last night. It would have been bad enough if Diaz actually was from Mexico, but she was born and raised in the United States and is therefore as American as President Bush himself. I was at City Hall that night and I remember literally feeling my skin crawl when Diaz had those words flung at her, followed by a rowdy burst of applause that echoed through the chambers.
It crawled in much the same way when I read about the family of legal immigrants from El Salvador who moved into a house in Kentucky and received, instead of a welcome basket, a burning cross on their lawn and a note that read:
"My country, maybe. My neighborhood ---- no way."

Thanks to satellite radio, cable TV and video-sharing Web sites like YouTube, it has never been easier to dehumanize people ---- in the name of comedy and entertainment. What was once considered shocking and degrading is now not only acceptable but considered worthy of emulation. One of the most extreme examples of hate disguised as entertainment was seen on a recent YouTube video posted by "The Cockroach Hunter," better known as Robert Crooks, founder of the Mountain Minutemen. The video, shot through a night scope and accompanied by a running commentary of ethnic slurs and profanity, shows the tracking and
apparent shooting of an undocumented immigrant on the border. It was removed from YouTube a few days ago, but not before it was viewed by thousands of people, giving rise to a free-for-all of hate in the ensuing comments and blog

"With Love From California To Tabasco, Chiapas AndTuxtla Gutierrez"
In November 2007, after a few weeks of the floods in October 2007 ( BBC in Pictures ) that affected hundreds of thousands of residents in the states of Chiapas, Tabasco and Tuxtla Gutierrez in the South of Mexico, residents of San Francisco and the SF Bay Area, started to voice concerns on the popular Spanish radio talk show, "Hecho en California" with Dr. Marcos Gutierrez, at the news that the relief was not getting fast enough to the poorest of those affected.
The desire to help was fervent and a call to action took form from that program, it was decided to hold a mini fund raiser radiothon, questions were raised i.,e., 1. How do we get the help/material/resources directly to the people?, 2. How do we know that the help es really distributed?
From amongst the program's audience and sponsors, came the information that a religious group had been on the ground for several years providing basic services in the area and had the structure to deliver the services and resources as soon as they arrived.
It was agreed by the audience to accept the proposal to partner with them, with the proviso that it was expected that reports be sent back to "Hecho en California"'s Audience to document the disposition of the funds - It was also decided to send an emisary to deliver these funds, inspect the damage and report back to us. Dr. Marcos Gutierrez was proposed as the person to make the trip, and that it had to be independently financed, Dr. Gutierrez accepted and the trip's cost was donated by one of the program's sponsors.
It took awhile to receive all the documentation RE The Tabasco/Chiapas/Tuxtla Gutierrez Relief Fund for the victims of the floods, aptly named, "Desde California a Tabasco/Chiapas/Tuxtla Gutierrez Con Amor" ("With Love From California To Tabasco/Chiapas/Tuxtla Gutierrez"), but on February 17, a video was shown and a binder with copies of the pertinent checks (Front and Back) And the Original Receipts of purchases was presented to the people who showed up to the invitation made on radio to see view the documentation.
This is the video and the docs' binder can be examined to whoever may question the transparency of the transactions by email to Dr. Gutierrez from "Hecho en California".
Immediately below the video, please find the text of the final report send on Nov. 30 to contributors to the relief effort.

This is the final report on the funds raised for The Tabasco/Chiapas/Tuxtla Gutierrez Relief Fund for the victims of the floods
As of Thursday, November 29, 2007, the total amount deposited in the "Hecho en California/Tabasco Relief Fund" was, $23,099.00
Albeit we had said that our choice was not to receive cash, in the Sunday Nov. 25 fundraising event, there were donations in cash, thanks to the foresight of one of our volunteers, Mrs. Isabel Gutierrez who brought receipts, each cash donor's name and amount received was logged in and was extended a receipt with the name, amount and date of the donation.
As of Saturday Nov. Nov. 24, we had received donations totaling $14,227.00 and on the Sunday, Nov. 25, 2007 event, we received in checks $4045.00 and in cash $3072.00, giving us a subtotal of $7117.00 raised on that day
This gave us a pre-final total amount of $21,344.00
In addition, there were pledges that we had not been received and when they arrived by Thursday, November 29, the amount was $1755.00 which gave us a final total of $23,099.00.
On behalf of our sisters and brothers in need in the States of Tabasco, Chiapas and Tuxtla Gutierrez in Mexico, we thank you and are very grateful for your generosity.
As planned, Dr. Marcos Gutierrez departed on the night of Nov. 29 to deliver the funds, tour the devastated zone, document (Video, audio) the damage and ascertain that all parties involved are clear on how the funds will be used. Upon his return and on a date and place to be specified later, he'll give us a report of his trip and show the videos taken during that visit on an event to be announced later.
We heard from Marcos via phone from Mexico City shortly after 9:00 AM today, Nov. 30, on his radio program, where he informed his audience that he was about to board another plane bound for Tabasco, once there, he'll be reporting to the "Hecho en California" Weekend programs.

WOMAN'S DAY WEEK CELEBRATION EVENTS Dear community this March is going to be inspiring in the Mission as we start the month with a series of activities that celebrate Women's day in a very new and exciting way! We begin on Sunday March 2 at Dance Mission Theater on 24th and Mission (across the st. from BART) wit INMANCENCIA a performagic ceremony to awaken the sacred in our daily lives, this performance is a collaboration with dancers, improvisers, performance artists, astrologists, musicians and healers. We will bring our bodies into current astrological time and assess the challenges of this new time, dissolve the obstacles that obscure our vision and transmute energies into fertilizer for the earth. All these metaphors will be sang, performed, prayed, danced, we will create an altar of food which audience and performers together will feast on at the end of the show. We ask all participants to continue to be in touch with the intentions of this evening by keeping a candle, a daily prayer, a sacred gesture that would allow the new seeds to be planted in the new moon. MARCH 7TH LIMPIAS DE LUNA NEGRA...from noon to 5 pm healers, drummers and performers get together in the corner of Mission and 16th Street for one of the sweetest community offerings we organize. Everything that happens here is organic and very sacred. Mixcoatl Mexika Dance will break ground, healers Luis vazquez Gomez, Denzal Santana, Jorge Molina and MamaCoAtl will offer blessings, healing, clearing, smudge, copal, fresh water, drums..to all who gravitate in this area. This Limpia has been very successful in previous years and it is most auspicious astrologically. THAT NIGHT MamaCoAtl and Pepa Quiroga will pay tribute to LA MUJERES EN SU LUNA, this is a fun concert to play with all those concepts that have become politically incorrect like the act of "parir", "cocinar", "parrandear". We will speak the unspeakable like PMS, indigenosity, irreverence, this concert will be held at L's Cafe* which is woman owned and operated by hermanitas Lozano, and it will be so much FUN! We end up the week on March 8th International Woman's Day at galeria de la Raza with our Spoken Word event LA ULTIMA PALABRA...if yours was the last word...what would it say...
