The event is held in November to honor Rita Hester, whose murder on November 28th, 1998 kicked off the "Remembering Our Dead" web project and a San Francisco candlelight vigil in 1999. Rita Hester’s murder — like most anti-transgender murder cases — has yet to be solved.   Although not every person represented during the Day of Remembrance self-identified as transgender — that is, as a transsexual, crossdresser, or otherwise gender-variant — each was a victim of violence based on bias against transgender people.   The Transgender Day of Remembrance serves several purposes. It raises public awareness of hate crimes against transgender people, an action that current media doesn’t perform. Hate speech in the media A threat to the internal security of the U.S.

As hate speech spirals, a local group of community activists are organizing a demonstration in San Francisco against shock jock Michael Savage. The group, Hispanic / Latino Anti-Defamation Coalition SF, plans to rally in front of the building which houses radio station KNEW-AM where Savage transmits his nationally-syndicated program.

In his car, police found a four-page letter in which he expressed his hatred of the "liberal movement’, and wrote he targeted the church "because of its liberal teachings" and his belief that "all liberals should be killed" because they were "ruining the country."

Inside Adkisson’s home, officers found "Liberalism is a Mental Health Disorder" by radio talk show host Michael Savage; "Let Freedom Ring" by talk show host Sean Hannity; and the book, "The O'Reilly Factor," by television talk show host Bill O'Reilly. These three continuously demonize liberals, immigrants and others.

On Glenn Beck’s nationally syndicated radio show, The Glenn Beck Program, he read an "ad" produced and posted by subscribers to his website, for a refinery that turns Mexicans into fuel (Mexinol).

Neil Boortz suggests giving nuclear waste to illegal Mexican immigrants to take back to Mexico and tell them "it’ll warm tortillas", plus they will be easy to spot because of the "glow" if they try to return.

Savage warns politicians about illegal immigrant "vermin."

Shock jocks insist their rants are not hurting anyone and that they are not inciting hate attacks. Meanwhile disenfranchised groups continue to be targeted. Take, for instance, the savage beating of Luis Eduardo Ramirez Zavala by a group of four young white males in Shenandoah, Pennsylvania on July 12.

An eyewitness to the beating who happens to be a retired police officer, heard the youths telling Ramirez’s friends to "get out of Shenandoah or the same thing would happen" to them.
"We saw a bunch of kids walking away and screaming things like "‘Go back to Mexico.’ We called the police," said Arielle Garcia, 17, a friend of Ramirez who was at the scene; Luis Eduardo died about 30 hours later.

Legislation and programs designed to provide basic human rights and services regardless of legal status are being curtailed or dismantled, while punitive anti-immigrant legislation is being enacted in localities in all the states and a number of hate groups and the violence leveled against minorities is on the rise. Human rights organizations are under attack, demonized for allegedly helping ‘criminals’

All of the above, plus immensely more, is made possible by the poisoning of the minds of millions of Americans, who are bombarded daily with outrageously false and inflammatory claims, designed to prejudice public opinion against groups and entire communities without allowing the opportunity to present opposing views and facts, which would refute the propaganda full of lies, misinformation and disinformation.

Are M. Savage, B. O'Reilly and S. Hannity Guilty of Accessory to Murder?

When police searched the car of the gunman who opened fire in a Unitarian Church in Tennessee, they found a 4-page letter expressing his hatred of the "liberal movement." A regular consumer of Bill O'Reilly, Michael Savage and Sean Hannity, Jim David Adkisson was only following the arguments they make day in and day out, to their logical conclusions.

Police found right-wing political books, brass knuckles, empty shotgun shell boxes and a handgun in the Powell home of a man who said he attacked a church in order to kill liberals "who are ruining the country," court records show.

Knoxville police Sunday evening searched the Levy Drive home of Jim David Adkisson after he allegedly entered the Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church and killed two people and wounded six others during the presentation of a children's musical.

Adkisson targeted the church ... "because of its liberal teachings and his belief that all liberals should be killed because they were ruining the country, and that he felt that the Democrats had tied his country's hands in the war on terror and they had ruined every institution in America with the aid of media outlets."

Adkisson [said] that "he could not get to the leaders of the liberal movement that he would then target those that had voted them in to office."

Inside the house, officers found "Liberalism is a Mental Health Disorder" by radio talk show host Michael Savage, "Let Freedom Ring" by talk show host Sean Hannity, and "The O'Reilly Factor," by television talk show host Bill O'Reilly.

Can they be charged with "Accessory to Murder"? Are they culpable?

In the strict sense of the Law, this seems to be the case, yet, I have not seen, not heard anyone raise this question specifically uttering the word "Accessory"; I have heard questions on whether or not they incited the actions of Jim D. Adkisson at the Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church, where two were killed and six wounded.

One person posing the question is Joshua Holland, at AlterNet, who asks: "Did Right-Wing Shock Jocks Motivate Knoxville Killer?", another one is The Rev. Chris Buice, The pastor of Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church, who has given a lot of thought to the subject of hate lately, the Pastor is full of curiosity, doubt .

He is curious to know whether any clues might be gleaned from the words of right-wing radio talk-show host Michael Savage and Fox News personalities Bill O'Reilly and Sean Hannity, whose books later were seized as evidence from Adkisson's Powell residence by police.

He is curious whether the authors prayerfully consider their words.

"The words you choose may be the difference between war and peace," Buice said. "Every diplomat knows that."

He noted that, in the run-up to the Rawandan genocide of 1994, during which hundreds of thousands of ethnic minority Tutsis and political moderates died, the country's Hutu majority-controlled radio broadcast hate-fueled propaganda encouraging listeners to exterminate the "cockroaches."

"I believe in rigorous debate," Buice said, speaking to his belief in the danger of dehumanizing language that can label and categorize one person from another. "but what's the difference between a political opponent and a cockroach? You stomp a cockroach. You debate a political opponent. I believe, if you truly listen to your opponent, it will make you better."

Who can forget how the propaganda machine of Germany's Nazi Regime demonized Jews by blaming them of all the maladies affecting the population? Dehumanizing them so as to inflame the populace's attitudes, while desensitizing them, so they would go along, or at least turn a blind eye to the unimaginable acts that were to follow, we know the horrendous results that these words had, millions were killed.

And the difference between what the Nazis did and what the Savages, the O'Reillys and the Hannitys are doing, is?

I don't think that we need to wait until millions are exterminated, do we? The fact of the matter is that people are being killed because of what they are, as was Luis Ramirez in Shennandoah PA, or because of what they believe in, as was the case in the Tennessee's Church killings.

Millions are being terrorized by what ICE's officers have become, institutionalized terrorists, who routinely break the law and who walk all over the constitutional guarantees and the human rights of people who have been demonized, and degraded, to the level of coachroaches and "Vermin", as Savage has said undocumented immigrants are.

All of this while many people turn a blind eye, at the same time that others actually cheer and urge that these practices be accelerated.

For the latter, it may be too late for redemption, as for the former, The Rev. Martin Luther King said it best:

History will have to record that the greatest tragedy of this period of social transition was not the strident clamor of the bad people, but the appalling silence of the good people.

Families are being separated, people are arrested and treated inhumanely, as was the case with Juana Villegas:

Juana Villegas gave birth to a baby on July 5. She had been arrested by Davidson County Sheriffs on the 3rd. At the hospital she was shackled until the very final stages of labor. The situation was so brutal that the labor and delivery nurses were crying. Later, when she was taken back to the jail she developed infections in both breasts because the officers at the Davidson County Jail (in Nashville) would not allow her to have a breast pump. She was separated from her newborn for 2 days. The baby developed jaundice.

Where is the outrage? This news had scant coverage, even in the Spanish Media, as far as I know, today is the first day that Univision covered it, any search turns up some blog entries lamenting or deploring this outrage, while others are actually taking the position that she had it coming, as if she deserved it for violating immigration laws, the comments are truly beyond the pale in the hate that oozes from them, these words reflect the language that the hatemongers spew through the airwaves and that are then implanted in the heads of what used to be people, but that have become zombie-like creatures, incapable of feeling their humanity when it comes to the people they have been incited, or maybe it can be rightfully said, were programmed to hate.

For years, these hatemongers, plus the countless others engaged in the profitable business of creating division, intolerance, hate and violence, have been warned by outraged people of good faith and citizens concerned at the damage to the internal security of the United States that these present day monsters, and their listeners, pose to minorities, to people who do not fit the 'accepted' norm, and to the population at large, they have been told time and time again, about the dangers that their words represent, in addition, they have been presented with concrete cases of the results and consequences of their hateful, and of their also full of hate words, hoping without hope, to appeal to the better part of themselves, appealing to their humanity.

So far, it has been an exercise in utter futility.

So now we have clear evidence of a direct connection between the hate they preach and the actions of one of their listeners.

What are they responsible for? That is why I asked the question: Are M. Savage, B. O'Reilly and S. Hannity Guitly of Accessory to Murder?

"Michael Savage is not the sickness, he is a God-Awful symptom"

Of Media Ownership's Rules and Regulations.

There's a claim that Michael Savage is not racist, xenophobic, homophobic, transphobic, misogynist, etc. and that the language and the characterizations he uses daily in his show "The Savage Nation" Are merely the words of a Patriot who is defending his country, as the mantle he put on implies by the creation of his "Paul Revere Society" with him riding his horse yelling: "The Latino immigrants are coming to invade us!", "The Latino immigrants are coming to invade us!"

Now, there's a debate that needs to take place but, alas!, the so called "Mainstream Media", in general, does not allow for opposing views to be heard, as to why this is so would take at least a full volume to do justice to the issue, but in short, these media people on the fringes of the political dialog such as: Neal Boortz, Bill O'Reilly, Glen Beck, , Ann Coulter and many others, have nationally syndicated shows and/or are invited to Network Channels and allowed to make outrageous and regularly baseless comments without challenge from the hosts and with the exception of a few guests with mildly opposing views, there's practically no guests with real opposing views or opinions, or these shock-jock hosts are just simply dismissed or ignored thus keeping the stream of hateful words to continue unabated.

Whether or not people like Michael Savage are prejudiced or hold phobias against segments of the population who are attacked as groups, it is not the main issue, at stake is the poisoning of the minds of millions of people who then make decisions based on what they hear on such shock-jock shows to support exclusionary or punitive legislation in accordance with the message received, it also creates and sustains a social atmosphere that adversely hurts the targeted groups without the benefit of hearing the other side of the narrative.

Case in point: On August 14 2007 there was a press conference to announce a demonstration on August 15 2007 in front of M. Savage's broadcasting booth to protest his statements RE immigrant students fasting to raise awareness and support for the passage of the DREAM ACT.

Is it Hate Speech what Savage and people also holding his positions do?, or is it Free Speech as his supporters claim?

We, the protesters feel that what Michael Savage does, creates an atmosphere of warrantless intolerance that incites hate and violence and needs to be publicized/debated/discussed in public forums, but with the exception of Spanish speaking Media's limited coverage of the action, the Mainstream Media silence on it, was deafening, besides a C.W. Nevius balanced article in the San Francisco Chronicle: Despite Latino protest, silencing Savage seems unlikely" Wednesday, August 15, 2007, and some bloggers reporting on Michael Savage's words and what people are saying, as you can find on the Huffington Post Bloggers:, you have to go to Spanish speaking reporters such as Erika Cebreros', writing for El Mensajero and La Opinion Digital - Discriminación ‘salvaje’ - Rechazan ‘palabras de odio’ - Protesta comunidad latina contra el locutor Michael Savage, arrollado por el ‘Tren de la dignidad humana’ Lunes, 20 de agosto de 2007 , the few seconds on the 6 and 11 pm news shows on Univision, Telemundo, local English TV outlets in SF on that day, progressive websites and 'leftist' local publications, what you normally find on the Mainstream National Media and on the internet, are misleading articles, the rest for the most part, is intolerance and hate coverage.

Thanks to some local Spanish AM radio stations in San Francisco, San Jose, Sacramento, Seattle and Phoenix, that I know of, who gave us air time to carry our message locality to locality, we will get there if we keep the eyes on the prize.

Born Michael Weiner in the Bronx in 1942, the future Savage graduated from Queens College with a degree in biology, after which he attended the University of Hawaii for master’s degrees in anthropology and botany. He spent the rest of the late 1960s and early 1970s traveling the South Seas. Weiner received his doctorate from the University of California in epidemiology and nutrition science. He became an expert on herbal remedies, penning more than 15 books while still known as Michael Weiner, including such classics as Earth Medicine, Earth Food, Getting off Cocaine: 30 Days to Freedom, and The Complete Book of Homeopathy. While his knowledge base in herbal medicine was vast, he was more of a snake oil salesman than anything else. In Getting off Cocaine, he gave addicts “an alternative plan for getting ‘high’” that consisted of a daily dose of Sudafed, vitamins C and E, amino acids, and the occasional coffee enema. No word on the effectiveness of this treatment. His turn to the far right coincided with the rise of gay activism, as he linked homosexuality to the spread of not only AIDS, but the general spread of disease.

Savage is a prime purveyor of the slanderous liberal-bashing that passes for “humor” on talk radio. He describes his style as a mix of “Plato, Henry Miller, Jack Kerouac, Moses, Jesus, and Frankenstein,” although a comparison to Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde would also be appropriate, given his frequent mood swings. Savage is juvenile and defensive in his insults, resorting to lazy and trite grasps at “humor” as well as frequent comparisons of prominent progressives to Nazi leaders. In reference to Jimmy Carter’s criticism of Israel’s West Bank policy, Savage called him an “anti-Semitic bastard,” “Jew-hater,” and “war criminal” who is “like Hitler.” Yes, Michael Savage compares a celebrated humanitarian and Nobel Peace Prize winner to the man responsible for one of the worst genocides in history. He has referred to Brokeback Mountain as Bareback Mounting, making him as original as the guy who comes up with puns for pornographic movie titles.

Savage is also convinced that affirmative action is a conspiracy to hold back all white males.

Everyone who has ever known Michael Weiner seems to agree that he has always been a big talker. One of his classmates from Jamaica High School in Queens, which Weiner graduated from in 1959, recalls him as a garrulous character: "He was on the short side, and he was intense -- a fast talker, and always hatching some scheme or other." "The fellow I knew was a natural comic and as reliable as a clock," remembers another classmate, who says the teenage Weiner was "non-political." His yearbook page notes his participation in the Chemistry Lab Squad, school government, and the Rifle Squad, presaging his interest in science, politics and firearms.

The treatment involved ingesting a daily cocktail of Sudafed, vitamins C and E, and amino acids, as well as self-administering the occasional coffee enema. "Use a good quality coffee," Weiner advised. "Not decaffeinated or instant."

Using the pseudonym Michael Savage, he's launched a one-man mission to save America from its enemies at home and abroad, which on any given day includes liberals, gays, academics, the homeless, the Clintons, immigrants, feminists, CNN, the American Civil Liberties Union, Muslims and other minorities. Broadcasting three hours a day, five afternoons a week, from a rented studio in downtown San Francisco, he gives voice to the right wing's darkest fantasies. He muses about launching preemptive nuclear strikes on the Middle East ("I wish to God the hatches were open and the missiles were flying!"), suggests gunning down illegal immigrants ("If we had a government, we'd blow them out of the desert with airplanes!"), dreams of dispatching with "commies, pinkos and perverts" and other undesirables ("I say round them up and hang 'em high!") and even paraphrases a remark attributed to Nazi leader Hermann Goering ("When I hear someone's in the civil rights business, I oil up my AR-15!")

IS IT HATE SPEECH? or is it FREE SPEECH?

And what's race has to do with it?

Besides being a good question, it is one that needs to be answered pronto, isn't?

While it is true that most of us have an answer, or at least we think we do, the fact of the matter is that whatever our position on the question is, it directly conflicts at a visceral level with camps holding different opinions and positions on the matter, so the solution clearly lays in agreeing to a compromise on where Free Speech ends and Hate Speech begins, or if there is a start and an end for that matter.

The answer is so obvious that it appears simple, or so we think... or may be lead to believe, whichever the case may be.

In my opinion, it is the wrong question, as a matter of fact, it is not ven a question, it should be a conclusion; some of the real questions to be answered and agreed upon are, what is free speech? are there or should there be any limits to free speech? what is hate speech? what are the qualifiers for either term?

A quick overview of the dialog on the issue, clearly shows that there are two basic points of view, a) there should not be any limitations to voicing your opinion in words and, b) when opinions in words incite violence, discrimination, aggravate phobias which harm human beings and/or curtail Constitutional Guarantees, it ceases to be free speech and turns into "Hate Speech" - Or puting it in another way, the freedom of one ends where the freedom of others begin.

Again, even so, the task of carrying a civil debate seems overwhelming due to the antagonistic tone of the discussion because it is always the other side the one engaging in Hate Speech, the solution appears simple; let's talk, let's have a dialog for the good of society, for the well-being of this country and it's relations with others.

Not so fast! We still have to address and deal with the racism that colors the opinions of some and drives the actions of others, in addition, let's include in the dialog the interests of those who benefit from the division of races and classes... do I need to continue?

And now I come full circle, the answer to thebasic question is simple,
Q. What to do?
A. We need to talk

BROOMFIELD – It started with a simple question and ended with at least one student chanting "white power" in a classroom.

It happened Tuesday in a classroom at Holy Family High School, the Catholic school that sits at the corner of 144th Avenue and Sheridan Boulevard in Broomfield.

The classroom discussion started with the question: Why do students need to learn Spanish?

According to the Archdiocese of Denver, the conversation soon became about immigration and it turned ugly.

"It became a heated discussion and some rhetoric was used that was inappropriate for the classroom," said Jeanette DeMelo, spokesperson for the Archdiocese of Denver.

It's been four months since a chorus of San Diego Minutemen shouted at Olga Diaz to "go back to Mexico" at an Escondido City Council meeting, yet Diaz still hears their jeers as clearly as if they were shouted at her last night. It would have been bad enough if Diaz actually was from Mexico, but she was born and raised in the United States and is therefore as American as President Bush himself. I was at City Hall that night and I remember literally feeling my skin crawl when Diaz had those words flung at her, followed by a rowdy burst of applause that echoed through the chambers.

It crawled in much the same way when I read about the family of legal immigrants from El Salvador who moved into a house in Kentucky and received, instead of a welcome basket, a burning cross on their lawn and a note that read:
"My country, maybe. My neighborhood ---- no way."

Thanks to satellite radio, cable TV and video-sharing Web sites like YouTube, it has never been easier to dehumanize people ---- in the name of comedy and entertainment. What was once considered shocking and degrading is now not only acceptable but considered worthy of emulation. One of the most extreme examples of hate disguised as entertainment was seen on a recent YouTube video posted by "The Cockroach Hunter," better known as Robert Crooks, founder of the Mountain Minutemen. The video, shot through a night scope and accompanied by a running commentary of ethnic slurs and profanity, shows the tracking and
apparent shooting of an undocumented immigrant on the border. It was removed from YouTube a few days ago, but not before it was viewed by thousands of people, giving rise to a free-for-all of hate in the ensuing comments and blog

The Death of a "Criminal"

Her name was Maria Isabel Jiménez Vázquez, she was 17-year-old and pregnant and died because her employer did not give her proper access to shade and water as she pruned grape vines in 100-degree heat.

Investigators said they found multiple violations including the illegal use of child labor, multiple workers using one timecard and employees forced to purchase their own tools and equipment to harvest crops.

Inspectors visited about 50 farms Tuesday.

The death of Maria Isabel Vasquez Jimenez is now under investigation by Cal OSHA following allegations she was denied water, shade and other basic human rights while pruning grape vines in near triple-digit heat.

Hundreds of farm workers have been holding a march to the state capitol with the Jimenez family for the past few days.

United Farm Worker official Arturo Rodriguez said Jimenez's death was the 10th from heat exhaustion in the past four years.

"Maria Isabel was the youngest of the farmworkers," said Rodriguez. "She was the first woman that died as a result of this...and she was the first person who died being pregnant at the time."

Steven J. Ybarra, JD from the California Progress Report in his editorial "In Memory of Maria Isabel Jiménez Vázquez...." writes:

Many Americans today are buying the right “wingnut” lie that Mexican workers are destroying the economy. They buy off on the xenophobia put out by the wingnuts who blame the war, gas shortages, and deaths in Iraq on workers who come here to pick fruit and clean toilets at your friendly neighborhood motel.

Steven is right in both, in the question and in the answer, the minds of many people have been poisoned with a daily barrage of anti-immigrant hate speech by a large number of RightWingNuts with access to microphones and tv cameras who continuously spew hate and blame toward 'undocumented immigrants (They call them 'illegals'), prominent amongst them are, Lou Dobbs, Glenn Beck, Bill O'Reilly, et al - One of the most vicious and whose tirades of hate reflect his name, is Michael Savage, who warned U.S. politicians not to "take to the streets" to support illegal immigrant "vermin" and routinely calls these immigrant workers, criminals.

Vermin?

To what extent the RightWingNut onslaught of hate and demeaning speech against immigrants contributes to the way these humans are viewed and treated?, or in this case, mistreated, yes, they are humans beings just like you and me, in spite of what these hatemongers say and despite how employers abuse and exploit these workers.

Dr. Marcos Gutierrez in his weekdays radio program "Made in California" Regularly points out, that much as in Hitler's Germany of the 1930s, with it's dehumanizing speech against the Jews, made possible the atrocities that were to follow, so it is in these United States, that the anti-immigrant sentiment sowed in the minds of people by the media hatemongers, makes it also possible to view immigrants as less than human and thus fertilize the political ground, so draconian legislative measures can be implemented and barbaric raids conducted in a brutal manner be carried out, destroying lives, separating families, incarcerating children with their mothers, and on, and on, and on... ad infinitum.

But who was this criminal? Who was this 'lawbreaker illegal immigrant named Maria Isabel Vasquez Jimenez?

LODI, Calif. — They fell for one another in junior high school, in a village deep in Mexico's Sierra Madre range.

Within a few years, the young couple had crossed the border and found jobs pruning grapes in a California vineyard.

Maria and her friend, Florentino, had made plans: To work in this country for perhaps three years, save some money and then return to Oaxaca, get married and make a home and family there.

It wasn't long after that, that Florentino Bautista, 19, lost his pregnant fiancée when she fainted in his arms following hours of work in 100-degree heat. This week, Bautista is leading a poignant march to Sacramento to call for safer labor conditions on farms.

Two teenagers in love who traveled thousands of miles, surviving the deadly journey from the impoverished village to the fields in California in search of a better future, for them and for their families, in the case of Maria Isabel, to also help her widowed mother.

Criminals?

No, quite the contrary, Juan Hernandez makes a case that today's immigrants exhibit the traits and character which Americans admire in his book "New American Pioneers: Why Are We Afraid of Mexican Immigrants?", yes indeed, why?

Geraldo Rivera, in his book "His Panic: Why Americans Fear Hispanics in the U.S." and in his tv appearances on the subject, makes a connection between the demonizing of immigrants and the RightWingNuts in the media's antagonistic and hateful demeaning pronunciations against these workers.

No, not criminals, just workers with families to take care of.
